South Bay weekly round-up: One of our own

June 6, 2016 § 12 Comments

Justin Warfield, local South Bay cyclist and beloved teacher, died yesterday after succumbing to cancer. Justin taught countless kids in the South Bay, helping them achieve, overcome, and better understand the world around them. As a cyclist he was a regular member and feared legbreaker of the early morning Manhattan Beach crew. Justin could be found weekends without fail climbing in the Santa Monicas with his friends Harry Martinez, Dave Jaeger, Jeff Konsmo, Dan Seivert, Garret Bailey, Dave Adams, and the others who made up this tightly knit band of friends.

Justin’s cancer was discovered on a multi-day bike ride from San Jose back to the South Bay in 2015, when a fall took him into the ER early in the trip. A chance diagnosis revealed a malignant and fast growing tumor in his mouth, and the two options were either severely debilitating and disfiguring surgery or extremely aggressive chemotherapy. Justin chose chemotherapy and endured more than a year of incredibly painful therapy.

At last year’s South Bay Cycling Awards, Justin was nominated for the GC Award for his fortitude. An energetic, passionate teacher, and a force of strength and speed on the bike, Justin suffered through his treatment and the final phases of his illness quietly, without self-pity or drama, with extraordinary dignity, and with courage in the face of almost incomprehensible pain. Justin’s family has invited his friends, fellow cyclists, and well wishers to attend a celebration of his life tomorrow, Tuesday, June 7, at 6:00 PM, at the North End Bar & Grill, 2626 Hermosa Ave., Hermosa Beach. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 8, at 3:30 PM, American Martyrs Catholic Church, 624 15th Street, Manhattan Beach.
