Travel ready

July 7, 2018 § 13 Comments

I’m a fan of de-thinging. The fewer things you have the easier your life is. Nowhere is that truer than when it comes to travel. Pack light; it’s a lot easier to outrun security that way.

But what constitutes light?

For my upcoming three-week trip, I have to be able to do three things:

  1. Cycle
  2. Work
  3. Wander around clothed

Oh, and everything has to fit into a single, medium-sized knapsack. So here’s the list:

  • Passport
  • CDL
  • Credit cards
  • Headphones and charger
  • Phone and charger
  • Laptop
  • Laptop charger
  • Mouse
  • Euro adapter
  • Cash
  • Maps
  • Novel
  • Notebook
  • Pens
  • Watch
  • Sunscreen
  • Underwear x 2
  • Shorts
  • T-shirt x 2
  • Socks x 2
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Razor
  • Floss
  • Hex keys
  • Spare tube
  • Tire lever
  • Shorts x 2
  • Jerseys x 2
  • Socks x 4
  • Helmet
  • Lights
  • Giro shoes
  • Rain jacket
  • Big O kit for Damir
  • Gift South Bay Cycling socks
  • Ride gloves
  • Ride glasses
  • Ride wallet

To get

  • Razor blades
  • Otto Maria Graf books
  • Karl Kraus books
  • Baking book
  • Slovak books
  • Napkins

END

    Hello Seth,

    What is CDL?

And perhaps order the list by priority in the event you have to get lighter … (and faster)

21 days on 2 pairs of socks and 2 pairs of underwear – good on ya, mate! You are a better man than me. I hope the youth hostel has a laundry room.

I brought my bike, and clothes. The list seems a little ocd, are you a attorney or something? You forgot starter.

  • Edwin says:

No comb. That explains a lot. Have a great trip!

  • Dan says:

Ditch the laptop, dude! You’re on vacation, right? Someone covering your cases? You’re good with just the phone.

  • We’re frequent practitioners of sink-laundry on our international bike trips… a couple packets of Woolite is kind to the bike duds, and I always carry a few meters of paracord and some clothespins for drying.

We found Slovakia in general to be an interesting & entertaining country – lots of energy, friendly, and a feeling of potential! Ran across a GIANT mural of Sagan under a bridge in Bratislava 🙂

Have a great trip, and may nothing spill on your pants!

  • I know paper is real like steel bikes, but, an electronic book device might be the better travel option. It fits in the knapsack easier and can have certainly more than two books on it.

    • fsethd says:

Better to have one book, choose carefully, and read it cover to cover … I’m not much of a browser! (Remember when that was a word relating to the reading of books, not the senseless trawling of the Internet?)

What’s this?
